Honeymoon

Everybody knows the Honeymoon is the unforgettable moment in every newly married life, a holiday of a lifetime. Nobody knows exactly how this tradition started, but its origin can be one of the next:

Possibly the first mention about honeymoon is in the Bible: “When a man is newlywed, he need not go out on a military expedition, nor shall any public duty be imposed on him. He shall be exempt for one year for the sake of his family; to bring joy to the wife he has married.”  (Deuteronomy 24:5), enforcing the man must be with his new family to enjoy the beginning of his new life and to learn more about everything around it.

The tradition could have also been started with the German people, who used to marry in New Moon. At the ceremony the couple drank a mixture of water and honey to attract good luck for their new life as much as fertility and happiness.

Some experts say this tradition has been started in Rome when the guests threw drops of honey in the entrance of the newly married house wishing them a very “sweet life”.

Another ancient story about honeymoon tells that in ancient times a man kidnapped his beloved woman, and took her to some remote place for about one month, exactly the period between one Full Moon and another. During this time, the man offered to his future wife an aphrodisiac drink sweetened with honey, until she fell in love with him.

This first phase of marriage must be the sweetest, nothing but tenderness and pleasure which would allow the couple to start knowing each other and shaping a new life as beautiful as they have dreamed for so long.

Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed, Something Blue

The tradition says the bride must use Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed, and Something Blue. The blue means Purity and Fidelity, and that’s the way to take apart envy from some single friends or guests.

Tom Cruise & Katie Holmes

On Saturday, November 18^th of 2006 Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes get married in one of the most remarkable celebrity Weddings of the decade. The ceremony took place at the Odescalchi Castle in Lake Bracciano, Italy, and around 150 guests were invited, including some Hollywood stars.

The Scientology ceremony was short, lasting only 15 minutes, but the wedding was “absolutely beautiful”, said a guest. The reports said that if the ceremony was short, the Wedding kiss went on forever, almost a three minutes kiss that was only stopped by the guests who started shouting “Stop! Stop!” (Wow! That’s a lot of love… LOL).

Outside the castle, real fireworks announced the beginning of the party; meanwhile inside the castle, after cocktails, guests were served Italian hors d’oeuvres, followed by a multi-course meal, including bass and steak, before the five-tiered white chocolate cake, decorated with marzipan roses, and studded with white chocolate chips (sounds delicious, doesn’t it?).

They were serenaded by Andrea Bocelli, himself, and that’s certainly a great Wedding gift for anyone.


Katie wore an off-the-shoulder Armani gown with an ivory silk train adorned in Valenciennes lace and Swarovski beaded crystal embroidery (just wonderful!). The veil was an ivory tulle floor-length and ivory silk shoes, and some rumors say Tom himself helped design the dress. Also Katie’s bouquet of calla lilies was outfitted by Armani, as well as a champagne evening gown she wore at the reception.

Armani also outfitted Tom with a navy blue tuxedo by his Hand Made to Measure collection. The jacket label read, “”Giorgio Armani for Tom Cruise.”

The rings were white gold Cartier with diamonds, and they spent around $2 million dollars to fulfill their dream event.

The couple slipped off in the next morning for their romantic honeymoon in the Maldives, in the Indian Ocean, accompanied by their baby Suri.

Some of the celebrity guests included Will Smith, David Becker and Victoria, Brooke Shields, Jennifer Lopez, Marc Anthony, Jim Carrey, John Travolta, Kirstie Alley and Kelly Preston. Other wedding guests were Katie’s family, Tom’s mother, his children Connor and Isabella, the couple’s 6 month old (at the time) Suri, Jennie McCarthy, Andrea Bocelli, and hundreds more.

The Month

We were searching about the theme “Stories & Curiosities about Wedding”, and found some interesting novelties about it, like the month the bride and groom use to marry in different countries.

In Japan, for example, they use to marry in June (June Bridal). They believe that if the Wedding is realized in that month, the marriage is for a lifetime.
In some South American countries, May is the perfect month to marry, maybe because it’s the Mother’s Month, the month dedicated to Mary, related to maternity itself.

In Portugal, in the 1500’s, women never married in August because it was when the ships with their beloved explorers went to look for new lands, so to get married in that month meant to be alone, without honeymoon, and sometimes, to become a widow. Then if a wedding could not happen in July, Portuguese women would marry only during next September. This tradition was transformed into a superstition that persists even today in many places.

In Germany, however, women don’t believe in the magic power of this superstition, they use to marry in August, mainly on Fridays, not as a challenge, but as a tradition.

Since we were little girls, all of us dream of having a fairy tale wedding.  We used to imagine what kind of gown we would want to wear at our wedding, what kind of theme we would want to have and many other things. When the day is actually coming closer, there are so many details to take care of and it could sometimes become rather overwhelming.  Choosing where to hold the reception, shopping for the wedding gown, thinking about decorations and arranging food for the guests are just a few of many items that come along with this celebration of love. And of course, all of us want to make our wedding the most memorable wedding for ourselves, families, as well as for the rest of the guests.
Giving out wedding favors as a display of true appreciation is a long standing tradition.  Everything that is seen at the wedding: from the reception place to the menu, will be certainly enjoyed on this special day. However, it is the wedding favor that will make the wedding to be remembered for a long time. So picking out the right favor is extremely important.  But with a great number of options out there for these little tokens of love and appreciation, sometimes, it could cost a tremendous amount of time to decide which one to choose.

So, where do we start on deciding which wedding favors to choose?  Here are some pointers to help us decide the right favors for our guests.

By determining the theme and personality of the wedding beforehand, picking the appropriate wedding favors should be as easy as an ABC.

Flowers, Flowers, Flowers! What is something that is most remembered about the wedding besides the brides’ gown and the food?  Of course, flower arrangements – since they primarily define the theme of the wedding – Remember that different flowers represent various meanings of love. By choosing something like charming calla lilly bouquet candles, calla lily photo frames or even calla lilly design napkin holders as a favor can accent the symbols of beauty and exquisiteness of the wedding.  A traditional yet timeless long stem rose crystal can enhance the elegance and romance of the magnificent wedding. But wait. There are more to come.  Some of us even want to go beyond the most common favors simply because we want to add more fun and attitude to the splendor of this ceremony.  For instance, those who have passion for western theme could choose a shooter charm that enriches a personal touch of entertainment. Or perhaps choosing a unique ethnic theme such as a coaster painted with the word “love” in Chinese or Spanish will make the favors more exclusive and meaningful.

In short, most of us may think that choosing a wedding favor can be time consuming.  But it does not have to be that much work once we have some tips on where to start. Always remember that it is the company of friends and family that make a wedding memorable.
